TA Y6

In Year 6 we're all about encouraging our class members to become more independent and responsible for their learning and themselves, preparing them for their move up to high school.

Have a look below at some images from our maths lessons this year.

The group been working really hard and as a result achieving great things - all of them have now managed to receive the Tables Certificate from Mr La Chapelle - we're just waiting for the rest of Year 6 to catch up!!

After the half term break our revision work steps up a pace to ensure we are ready for our assessments in May. It's important that we look on these positively as an opportunity to show what we know, and that we know how to apply it and look forward to this!

Our weekly OXO Challenge, our start to the week - have a look at this OXO Challenge....how quickly could you complete it?

This is a great activity, we all strive to beat our own personal target and so many different aspects/areas of maths can be included in it - as well as reinforcing our tables knowledge, we can work with fractions, percentages and decimals...

Read below about the Maths work covered by 'The Wright Group' last year.....

The last week of the Spring term and didn't it fly by!

Plenty of work from the Wright Bunch down in the studio-Reflection, Translation and Rotation this week. We continued to make good use of Primary Games with the Shape Up activity, Banana Hunt and Reflect a Sketch. All of these activities are really good at consolidating and reinforcing our learning during the maths lessons. Check out the movie clips on the Yr6 News 2013-14 page.

As the week drew to a close we had some fun playing Co-ordinate Bingo, practising our co-ordinate        reading and plotting!

Friday, we had a shorter maths lesson as we enjoyed our final Mass of the term. With the Easter Holiday maths homework already issued on Thursday it left us free on Friday to complete our co-ordinate work with a message to decode.

Enjoy the Easter hols Wright Bunch, see you back in school Wednesday 23rd April!!!

One last thing......if you're stuck for something to do over the holidays check out Dara O'Briains School of Hard Sums television programme online....

A really busy week this week with some serious revision completed - well done team!

We started the week looking at Measures and part of this work was to think about standard measures we come across in our everyday lives......it was interesting to hear the Wright Bunch's suggestions of how tall Mr Long was!!

But we all longed to sample some of Roma's cooking - we were discussing imperial and metric units of mass.....honest!!

See how the rest of the group got on with Measure Match by checking in Yr 6 News 2013-14.

We moved onto Angles; identifying, measuring and drawing. And then calculating the value of missing angles......can you work them out?

We finished the week looking at 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. A variety of Maths vocabulary including vertices, faces, edges....and some interesting and sometimes surprising nets!!

Next week, as we reach the end of the Spring Term, we move on again.....reflective symmetry, rotational symmetry and a bit of translation even!

Return to Yr 6 News 2013-14 here.

What a start to the week - it's Fabulous Fractions!!

First up though our usual Tables Challenge - see if you can complete in under 2 mins......

Have a look below at a couple of movie clips of the group identifying fractions using one of the activities on Primary Games.

Having mastered the art of calculating a fraction of a number we moved on....to working with Percentages. Thinking about what percent actually means and then applying that to 'real life' situations....as well as converting fractions into percentages.....!

There were a couple of good maths activities we could try, fraction dice and a game of dominoes based on Fraction/Percentage/Decimal equivalents.

We finished the week working with Negative Numbers....again we used Primary Games and one of the activities in this pack to practice ordering numbers. There's some video clips below so you can see how we got on.

Next week we move onto Measures......return to the Year 6 News 2013-14.

This week it was time to move on....to the world of Function Machines, Algebra and Number Patterns and Sequences!

Not before, of course, having our usual Monday morning tables challenge....well done to Francis this week who not only managed to complete the grid, but 100% accuracy too!

We picked up a bit of extra work on division too, using a numberline, as this is often something that we find difficult...specifically we were looking to use our tables knowledge and link this with our ability to multiply by 10, 100 & 1000 to take an appropriate first jump to get as near to our target number as we could.

As with so many areas of Maths, good tables knowledge is a real bonus.....can't stress it enough Wright Bunch - KEEP PRACTISING THOSE TABLES!!

It was great to get stuck into some Algebra, not only were we solving algebraic expressions but we were substituting values too, this work was reinforced using Balance Puzzles....there's some examples below, can you work out the values?

We finished the week off working with some number patterns and sequences. We talked about Terms and Rules. It never fails to amaze how some of you can see the pattern (sorry - the rule!) straight off!!

Well done - a busy week, and we move on, on Monday, to one of my favourite topics Fractions!

Remember 'Primary Games' for some great activities to practice and reinforce your basic number skills.

These past two weeks we've been looking at Multiples and Factors, working out our Prime Numbers, as well as revising our methods for our 4 basic operations  -  Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

**KEEP WORKING ON THOSE MULTIPLICATION TABLES**

We've been developing strategies to use for mental addition using a great activity on Primary Games V5 called Sum Shuffle, and we've been seeing who in the group can achieve the highest score. Half of the group have already given the challenge a try and we hope to finish the rest this week - look out for the movie clips later in the week!

Ash Wednesday meant we had no Maths lesson - so Thursday we reviewed our test papers from Tuesday, and updated our Work Book with the pages to complete for self-assessment which need to be completed by Monday 10th.

There's a list of these at the top of the page for reference, which will be updated each week.

The final couple of days this week were spent looking at multiplication and division methods, and deciding which method we are each confident and secure with.

******REMEMBER THOSE KEYWORDS FOR OUR 4 OPERATIONS - LEARN THEM!******

You can see a video of Tyler using Sum Shuffle on YR6 News 2013-14.

Next week we move onto Algebra...amongst other things!

During the last two weeks 'The Wright Bunch' have been working on improving their maths skills looking at Place Value.

We've been thinking about the value of digits in numbers, to help us order them - from 7 digit whole numbers right down to numbers smaller than 1 - our decimal numbers, working in tenths and hundredths!

Understanding our number system is important and we've used the IWB for group activities using Primary Games, there's strong competition in the Group especially on the Decimal Challenge! Tyler, shown below making 10 with numbers to one decimal place, is in the lead so far - can you set a winning time? And, will you beat his time? We're in the Studio and our 'league table' is up on the board - come down and check it out.

Another focus for us as a group has been improving our tables knowledge - multiplication tables - that is!

Each Monday, we have a timed challenge - this weeks is below........

Can you beat 2 minutes to complete the grid?

We will complete an 'OXO Grid' every Monday, the set up varies - next week we will include multiplying by 100 & 0.1, and fractions will be added into the mix as the weeks go on!!

More Place Value this week, a really important area of maths in which we need to be secure and confident. We've looked at a variety of activities these last two weeks, including some independent book work, using our whiteboards for whole group activities and jottings/workings, and of course some good 'games' on the IWB. Have a look and see how Francis and Kieran got on....

After half term, we will moving on from Place Value specifically, although it underpins all that we do really. But in our first week of the new half term we will be looking at......Multiples and Factors, and revisiting our 4 Operations and looking at the methods we use to tackle these.
